Miquelrius vs. Moleskine
First, Jim compares the Moleskine and Miquelrius pocket journals to each other at Jeremy Wagstaff's LooseWire blog:
"While I like the Moleskine's "high end" features such as the strap, pagemarker and back pocket useful, it has drawbacks. The Moleksin has less volume, therefore I use one every three months as compared to a Miquelrius every eight months, even with extensive notetaking. This means the Moleskin is less useful as a portable archive. Size does matter, but the Miqquelrius is still small enough to fit in a trouser pocket."
Ever the engineer, Steve Duncan at the RecordingThoughts weblog replies with a detailed technical comparison of the Miquelrius vs. Moleskine:
"Anyway, it’s [Miquelrius] 4.09″ x5.90″ x .77″ thick, which is a total volume of 18.58 cubic inches. It has 200 leaves, each with 2 sides (i.e. pages) for a total of 400 sides to write on, or a pretty hefty 67 square feet of writing space.
The Moleskine, (pocket size, square ruled) on the other hand, is 3.6″ x 5.6″ x .52″ thick, which is a total volume of 10.48 cubic inches. It has 96 leaves, for a total of 192 sides to write on, which is a measly 27 square feet of space.
The Miquelrius has about 3.6 square feet per cubic inch, Moleskine has 2.6. If you are someone who’s looking for the greatest amount of writing space available for the space taken up in your bag or pocket, Jeremy’s friend Jim has it on the nose."

Tragically, I've just learned that Miquelrius has discontinued its manufacture of unlined notebooks. I am completely, utterly addicted to them. I actually write better, and oftener, in them, and it isn't just superstition speaking. It's that pleather cover, the bendability, the open page.... Tried the unlined, small Moleskins with the 16 tear-out sheets in the back; no good. Tried the lined Miquelrius books, both of the straight lined and graph line varieties: still, apoplectic sorrow reigns. Does anyone know how I might obtain a s%#tload of Miquelrius unlined notebooks, of either the 100-page or 200-page variety? I'm willing to pay the price, people....
Many thanks,
Allison DeFrees

I, too, am a fan of Miquelrius, although I must admit if you're limited on space and weight (for example during travel), Moleskine is a good choice. However, on a day-to-day basis, I use Miquelrius. I like the choice of paper sizes, the flexible cover and the size of the graph squares.
In my Miquelrius nbs, I add a ribbon marker by cutting an appropriate length of ribbon (usually in my case it's actually polyester seam binding tape purchased at the sewing store) and sticking one end to the inside of the back cover with double-sided tape. Because these ribbons tend to ravel over time, it's a good idea to cut it longer than initially needed and either to pink the edge (another sewing term, sorry!) or run a few stitches along the cut edge.
I suppose you could even use more than one ribbon as a sort of organizational tool, but I haven't tried that yet.

Allison, Miquelrius is coming out with a new version of our leather-look journals called flexible notebooks that will be in graph, lined or plain paper. You should start to see them in some stores in December 2005.

Please tell me where I might find Miquelrius notebooks either on-line (preferably) or in a store. My brother purchased at Books-a-Million a Miquelrius (Paperchase) notebook that has graph paper pages (square lined) and multiple colored sections. I must say that I covet this notebook but cannot find one anywhere. I have gone back to the Books-a-Million where he purchased the notebook and have search extensively on-line. I would appreciate any leads.
many thanks,
Mary

Hey, I just saw that Miquelrius started an affiliate program giving 5% commission to sales. I'm signing up and thought I would let you all know. Great way to earn a few extra $ and save on your own orders too :) And no, it's just a general link, I'm not making any $ from it.
I found the link here: http://www.shopmiquelrius.com/servlet/Affiliate
