Ciak!
When in doubt how to say Moleskine...
"This is your Ciak journal.
Inside, your pen can record your important and not so important notes, your major and minor details, your useful and useless information.
Then once you are finished writing, with the elastic band you close your journal with a ...ciak!
This book is meticulously handmade in Florence, Italy by those who love quality, versatility and style.
Ciak, much more than a Journal."
This is the first time I've heard of this brand, but then again I started using Moleskine only four years ago.

» Ciak Journals from Murky.org
At long last I've found the Italian supplier of my favourite notebook, Ciak. These are quite hard to find in the UK, a website called City Organiser have just stopped selling them (I got the last three). They're also available... [Read More]

You know, I didn't realize until I got to the part of the Cliak website that mentions their US distributor, but I bought one of these at Barnes and Noble about a year ago. Shows how brand conscious I am. The elastic band is nice, especially because after it has been held open a few times, the soft leather cover had a tendency to want to hang halfway open. I have the multi-colored paper version, and the colors are a little weird: two shades each of gray, orange, and brown. The darker shades of each color aren’t suitable for writing in pencil. The paper is smooth and holds ink well. I don't use a fountain pen, so I can't be certain but it seems thick enough that there shouldn't be a bleed-through problem for most. There's a ribbon bookmark (yellow in mine, which added to the six colors of paper and red cover makes the whole thing rather garish -- I'm not sure what I was thinking at the time!) and a spot to write your name inside the front cover.
Overall, I would rate it as a generically good journal, like several others (okay, more than "several") that I've picked up at a bookstore here and there. I won't go out of my way to find or avoid "Cliaks" in the future. Meanwhile, my favorites journal/notebooks are Paper Blank's (www.paperblanks.com) coat pocket and back pocket minis (I love the faux leather covers, plus they have back pockets, bookmarks, elastic bands and archival paper on par with Moleskines. But, beware their magnetic closure books; do you really wanna demagnetize your ATM card, ID badge, etc.?), and Moleskine sketchbooks (finally, paper that really does stand up to marker, pen, watercolor, pencil, collage, and anything else I feel like putting in my sketchbook!).

The multicoloured ciak pages are hideous, to be sure, however the cream ones are lovely.
I rate ciak very highly, and go out of my way to get them.

These sound very similar to the "Noto" journals that are for sale in Paperchase in the UK. They are made especially for Paperchase by an Italian company, though I can't remember the name of the company.
They also do a multi-coloured paper version, and although the colours sound different to the ones mentioned here, I think they're equally ugly, but the plain cream journals look OK.
Given the price difference between the "Noto" journals and Moleskine (they're a bit cheaper, but not much), I'd go for the Moleskine every time, but the Noto journals look OK.

Given that I just got my very first Moleskine{s} I guess I'll have to wait on checking out the CIAK. Gotta admit that I dig the plain black anyway. The post for Feb 15 {"happy moleskine day"} shows my very first Molskine entry. ::thrive!, O

I'm so happy to find other Ciak journal lovers. I had ordered them specially from Kate's Paperie in New York, but they might not do it anymore. I appreciate any tips on how they can be purchased (the ivory, lined large journal) from the U.S. Thanks!

I personally am a Moleskine girl but I like the cover of the CIAK's. Also I want the ivory but I may need to get multi coloured because I want to write about a few different topics. Unless anyone has any idea how I can divide up the notebook in a chic way?

I have a question about the CIAK notebook. This week I bought the Lamy Swift rollerball pen. I also have the Pilot G-2 07. How do they perform on the CIAK ruled paper? I personally find both pens not suitable for the thin Moleskine paper. Any suggestions as to which rollerball pen is the best for a CIAK notebook (I am interested in buying one)? Thanks!
